Icon from Côte de Nuits, Domaine Leroy triggers connoisseur’s interest, because of the excellent level of the wines and their rarity; these wines are almost unfindable on the market. The online auction closed on 27th September featured a rare series of grands crus produced by Lalou Bize-Leroy, which inevitably sparked off record bids.
The name of Lalou Bize-Leroy and the one of her domain have Grail value in the imagination of wine lovers. As a great figure of the wine world, she enjoys a fine knowledge of Burgundian terroir since she was a child. Indeed, her father, Henri Leroy, acquired 50% of the shares of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1942, and his daughter went with him every week when he visited the prestigious domain, until becoming co-manager from 1974 to 1992.
But Lalou Bize-Leroy also put a lot of effort in developing her own domain, which she took over in 1955. She increased the size of the vineyards by acquiring two domains (Charles Noëllat, Philippe Rémy) with prestigious vineyards (in Corton Renardes, Corton Charlemagne, Chambolle-Musigny, Charmes, Musigny). In total, a little more than 21 hectares on which she banned all use of chemical products. All the vines have been cultivated in biodynamics since 1988 and Lalou Bize-Leroy gives them daily attention.
This philosophy is also supported by a great sense of relations and business. Lalou Bize-Leroy is known for organizing memorable tastings much loved by the greatest critics. Moreover, in order to stop any speculative temptation, the prices ex-domain have increased sharply in recent years. Lovers wishing to “live” the experience of tasting wines from Leroy, are thus on the lookout for these bottles at auction.
During the online auction closed on 27th September, iDealwine offered a remarkable series of 100 bottles from Domaine Leroy (or, for some from the “premium” trade activity of Lalou Bize-Leroy), which were much noticed. Thus, prices unsurprisingly soared!
At the top of the grands crus offered, the Richebourg glowed. The 1990 vintage crossed the threshold of €3,000, auctioned €3,162 (increasing of 18% compared to its iDealwine Price Estimate). The 1996 vintage sold for €2,493. The much-sought-after grand cru from Romanée-Saint-Vivant went under the hammer for €2,432 (+14%) to an Italian amateur, while Clos de la Roche 1993 reached €2,371 (+44%). A bottle of Latricières-Chambertin 1991 saw its price increase of 59% reaching €2,128, and the Corton-Renardes 1991 increase of 51% to €1,277. The Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1990 was also successful in this superb vintage selling for €1,216 (+18%). And the list is still long of the booming prices of this domain’s wines, especially those shipped to Asia. Hong Kong lovers have set their hearts on many lots of Richebourg, Corton-Renardes or different cuvées of Nuits-Saint-Georges. European customers (Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Kingdom) focused more on Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts and Volnay Santenot. Among the white wines of the catalog, we can notice that a Russian amateur won a lot of Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1992, auctioned €268 a bottle. This planetary enthusiasm is not ready to lose momentum…
