Both red and white wines from château Rayas have livened up the online auction, which ended on 16th August on iDealwine.
Château Rayas occupies a special place in amateurs’ hearts and in the auction landscape. As we have been following the evolution of this mythical domain’s prices from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, for nearly 20 years, we have only very rarely seen them drop. The rarity, of course, and the difficulty of finding wines elsewhere than at the domain (or on iDealwine J) contribute to making Rayas one of the best blue chips among the great wines estimates. In the great vintages, and particularly in 1978, a bottle from Château Rayas reaches, or even exceeds €1,000. The most recent years deserve all the attention of amateurs, as well as the cuvées produced in the various properties managed by Emmanuel Reynaud, great figure of the wine world, sacred winegrower of the year by the Revue du Vin de France in 2015.
The wines of Emmanuel Reynaud are produced in Châteauneuf-du-Pape but also in Vacqueyras or more simply under the generic appellation Côtes-du-Rhône. Originally from a 10-hectare plot, the Châteauneuf wine from Château Rayas owes its finesse to an almost exclusively sandy soil, which is rare for the appellation. In the sale which ended on 16th August, whether white or red, all the lots from Château Rayas have seen their prices rise: in red the 2007 sold for €504 (+18%), the 2008 for €342 (+12%) and the 2001 for €336 (+17%). In white, the 1998 went under the hammer for €156 (+24%). The price increases for the second wine of the château (Pignan) are even more significant: the 2008 increased by 37% reaching €156, while the 2005 auctioned at €228 (+23%). Moreover, in order to acquire the Côtes-du-Rhône from Château de Fonsalette, €134 were needed for the 2005 (+24%) and €119 for the 2006 vintage (+24%). During this auction, most of the buyers were French, British and Belgian. But other recent auctions showed that demand for these wines is now becoming global.
