Let’s continue our tour of Bordeaux’s vineyards in the 2025 vintage, with a closer look at the wines of the Médoc: weather conditions, style and overall quality, along with the iDealwine team’s top picks.
Weather conditions in Médoc during the 2025 vintage
As you already know, the 2025 vintage in Bordeaux was warm and dry. In Médoc, sun-warmed gravel soils accentuated the early start to the season, favouring the formation of small, concentrated berries. Old vines, with their deeper root systems, proved especially resilient in these conditions. As a result, the harvest yielded healthy, intensely coloured fruit with strong tannic potential, while retaining surprisingly moderate alcohol levels for such a solar year.
Yields in Médoc were very low, in line with other Bordeaux sub-regions: 28.8 hl/ha in Margaux, 26.4 hl/ha in Saint-Julien, 30.2 hl/ha in Pauillac and 36.8 hl/ha in Saint-Estèphe. In Pauillac, for example, rainfall was significantly lower than average during key stages of the vine’s vegetative cycle: 287 mm between November and March (–53% compared to the 30-year average) and 373 mm between April and September (–7.9%).
In terms of grape varieties, blending choices vary across the appellations. In Saint-Julien, the proportion of Merlot – traditionally a minority component – increased slightly in the estate’s main wines this year (compared to 2023 and 2024), logically at the expense of Cabernet Sauvignon. In Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon continues to dominate, accounting for 86% of blends across leading estates, broadly in line with recent vintages. In Saint-Estèphe, the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon rose reaching an average of 70%, compared with 66.8% over the past five years. Finally, in Margaux, Cabernet Sauvignon is also slightly more prominent than usual, without any significant change in the proportion of Merlot.
Concentrated yet fresh wines
Faced with demanding conditions, estates stepped up their efforts both in the vineyard and in the cellar, adopting a highly precise approach aimed at preserving the natural balance of the fruit while carefully managing concentration.
The 2025 vintage combines power and precision, with finely defined tannins and striking freshness. It offers an assertive character, excellent ageing potential and a profile that is more approachable in its youth than other recent warm vintages.
