June’s auctions delighted lovers of wonderful collectable vintages. The “years of the century” – the 20th century that is – were in attendance. 1929, 1945 and 1961 were among the most successful vintages from the previous century.
One property set itself apart from the others in the auctions – Château La Mission Haut-Brion. A number of breathtaking lots of its wines were up for auction in June. The 1928 vintage (which was then eclipsed by the 1929 but is still a quality vintage) is the wine that saw the greatest hammer price last month, obtaining €4,257. Meanwhile, a bottle from 1929 sold for €4,132 in June’s auctions. A 1953 was auctioned off for €3,005 and the famous and rare 1961 was sold for €2,204. Travelling a little closer to the present day, a bottle from the 1989 vintage went under the hammer for €1,217. Its neighbour and illustrious premier cru classé from the 1855 classification, Château Haut-Brion also featured in last month’s auctions. Its 1929 vintage obtained €2,218 and its 1989 was sold for €2,066. So, who is looking for these wines? Well, wine lovers based in Hong Kong were particularly active as well as those based in Italy, France and Curaçao.
From Pomerol, Vieux Château Certan was also represented by beautiful collectable vintages. Its 1928 was sold for €1,926, its 1945 was auctioned off for €2,880, its 1947 was traded for €2,504 and a French enthusiast snapped up its 1961 for €1,565. Petrus was available in its 1966 vintage which sold for €2,003.
From Médoc, Château Latour also made headlines with a magnum from 1947 being sold to an Italian professional for €7,262. A same sized bottle from the 1952 vintage was snapped up by a buyer from Hong Kong for €3,005. Among the many rare lots sold in June, we saw a bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild from 1900 go under the hammer for €3,380.
