What to uncork when it rains in summer?

A group of people barbequing in the rain

Tired of dodging puddles and coming home soaking wet when it’s supposed to be the sunniest time of year? We feel you! That’s why we’ve put together a selection of wines that’ll be sure to put a smile even when the weather is miserable.

We think it’s fair to say that nobody wants to see too much rain when summer rolls around. In the coldest days of winter, we start dreaming about the warmth of the sun on our faces and what that means for our summer activities. So, naturally, it’s only going to put a dampener on things when summer turns out soggy. And for us wine enthusiasts who’ve had their summer bottles lined up for a while, rain and unsettled weather can really put a spanner in the works. So, what to uncork when the weather just isn’t saying “nice, chilled rosé”?Thanks to the imagination of winemakers, iDealwine can offer you several different directions to go in when the weather has got you down.

White wines for a rainy, summer’s day

  • Soleil de ChineDomaine Saint Nicolas: This is a wine that takes you to faraway lands with the promise of warmer climes. Thierry Michon’s biodynamic work has crafted a comforting delight with fruity and brioche notes.
  • Anjou Vent de Spilite – Domaine Ogereau: A superb white wine that unites freshness and minerality. It will transport you to somewhere else and iDealwine would recommend serving it with fish as its full of energy and invigorating. Just what you need to ward off the chill of the rain.
  • Arbois Cuvée d’Automne – Domaine de la Pinte: This is a bad joke on our part but we’re going with it (automne in French is autumn – or fall for our Northern American readers – in English). If the weather is feeling autumnal, why don’t you just go with the flow and drink something that is reminiscent of it? This is a beautiful Chardonnay and Savagnin blend for your evenings holed up at home in the warm and dry.
  • Chablis Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre – William Fèvre: William Fèvre delivers a complex and floral wine here. When the skies darken, promising a storm, this splendid Chardonnay is just the ticket.
  • Vin de France Libre comme l’air – Laura Aillaud: Feeling trapped at home not wanting to go out in the downpour?  Then, this beautiful natural wine with its name “Free like air” from Luberon in Provence where the sun shines and cicadas sing is exactly what you need.
  • Côtes du Rhône Le temps est venu – Stéphane Ogier: There is both a red and white version of this wine and either of them should help blow the rain clouds away… or at least help you forget about them.

Red wines for a rainy, summer’s day

  • Côte de Brouilly Les Grillés – Domaine Bonnet-Cotton: As you can’t be baked by the sun, we have this pretty Côte de Brouilly which is produced in small quantities. This spiced red wine stands out with its freshness (even if there’s no shortness of that outside.
  • Fleurie Coup de Foudre – Yann Bertrand: The bottle comes from intense, biodynamic work in Beaujolais. The Gamay delivers a beautifully concentrated, dazzling wine which can be enjoyed at any moment, even under stormy skies.
  • Bourgogne Neige de printemps – AMI (Willy Roulendes and Paul Perarnau): This elegant Pinot Noir is perfect for those days you spend inside hiding from the unseasonable weather.
  • Côtes du Rhône Une Goutte – Domaine Saladin: Tired of the constant downpours? Find refuge in this Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Clairette blend which would warm you as if you were beside an open fire.
  • Château Chasse Spleen: To keep for those days when nothing seems to be going right. Choose a vintage that’s already aged a bit so you can savour the tannins that have melted as time has gone by.

Other possible ideas

  • Eau de vie l’Abricot – Domaine Roulot: To counteract the water falling from the sky, we suggest this irresistibly delicious eau de vie, bursting with fruit flavours that have ripened perfectly under a summer’s sun.
  • Vin de France Gewurztraminer Libre sous le ciel – Domaine Josmeyer: Will the grey clouds ever part so that we can see the sun again? Because we would love to live free under the sky, and this rich, atypical wine crafted from macerated Gewürztraminer should help us do just that.
  • Fil de Brume Brut – Jeaunaux-Robin: This blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir will captivate you with its elegant freshness that’s in perfect harmony with the weather.
  • Moissons Ampelos Single Cask Organic Single Malt – Whisky Hautes Glaces: iDealwine is proposing a fine whisky produced in the southern Alpes. Its tropical fruit flavours will transport you somewhere where the sun always shines.
  • Montlouis-sur-Loire Triple Zéro – La Taille aux Loups: Because we all need a bit of sweetness in our lives. And when the temperature is getting on your nerves, there’s nothing left to do but treat yourself.

So, you’re now prepared the next time the weather gets you down in summer. And don’t forget, “Behind the cloud, the sun is still shining” – Abraham Lincoln
