March Auction report: Bordeaux and Burgundy deliver standout results

Burgundy wines that went under the hammer in March 2026

1945 Mouton Rothschild in magnum, Domaine d’Auvenay, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Gonon’s Vieilles Vignes… some of the world’s most sought-after wines under the spotlight.

Large formats drive demand for Bordeaux

Last month, a magnum of Bordeaux’s most celebrated wines, a 1945 Mouton Rothschild, fetched €32,802 – a staggering 162% increase on its price estimate! This truly mythical wine, bearing the ‘V for Victory’ emblem marking the end of the Second World War, was acquired by a French buyer.

Other notable results included a double magnum of 2019 Château Le Pin, which fetched €11,393 (+30%), a magnum of 1979 Petrus, sold for €3,781 (+50%), a magnum of 1976 Cheval Blanc, which reached €1,315 (+110%), and a magnum of 1998 Château Margaux, which achieved €1,164 (+60%).

Burgundy: Auvenay and Romanée-Conti lead the way

As is often the case, two estates topped the month’s auction results: Domaine d’Auvenay and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (along with Domaine Leroy also frequently featuring among Burgundy’s highest-priced performers).

A 2011 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet from Domaine d’Auvenay sold for €17,152 (+6%) to a Swiss buyer. Several other wines from the estate also drew strong interest, including 2014 Bonnes-Mares (€7,762, +3%), 2014 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères (€5,884, +12%), 2005 Auxey-Duresses La Macabrée (€4,257, +3%) and Bourgogne Aligoté Sous Châtelet (€2,880, +5%).

From Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, wines from La Tâche – the vineyard solely owned by the estate – were particularly sought after last month. A magnum from the 2005 vintage saw its price edge up (+9%) to reach €11,769. In bottle, the 1973 (+37%), 2006 (+11%), 2013 (+3%) and 2014 (+15%) vintages sold for between €3,500 and €5,000.

Rhône: Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes Gonon makes a noble return

Now discontinued, Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes from Gonon is an exceptionally rare cuvée – virtually impossible to find anywhere, except on iDealwine. Three bottles from the 2009 vintage changed hands last month: a lot of two fetched €2,116 (equivalent to €1,058 when scaled to 750 ml, +27%), while a single bottle sold for €1,340, marking a 61% increase on its price estimate.

Italy: Mascarello, Tignanello and Sassicaia mature vintages

A rare Italian wine found its way to auction last month: a magnum of 1955 Barolo Cannubi Riserva  from Cantina Mascarello, sold for €876, marking a 133% increase on its price estimate.

Among Tuscany’s great classics, two well-known Super Tuscans also stood out: Tignanello (Marchesi Antinori) and Sassicaia (Tenuta San Guido). A magnum of 2017 Tignanello sold for €551 (+10%), while Sassicaia was represented by several vintages, all of which performed above their price estimates: 2010 (+2%), 2016 (+7%) and 2017 (+5%).
