Which are the highest-priced wines in the world?

Leroy burgundy wines sold at auction

At auction, bidding can quickly escalate when exceptional bottles come under the hammer and collectors go head-to-head in pursuit of truly exceptional bottles. LeroyPetrusEgon MullerLeflaiveLa Romanée-ContiAuvenay, Roumier, Rousseau, Lafleur, Jayer, Salon, Latour, Mouton-Rothschild… which of these estates do you think is behind the highest-priced wine?

You may not already aware that early 2026 saw a new record set for the highest-priced bottle of wine ever sold: $812,500 in New York. At iDealwine – the world leader in online wine auctions – we’ve put together our own rankings of the highest-priced wines in the world. We looked back over more than a decade of auction results, from 2013 to 2025, focusing on the names that consistently dominate the top end of the market rather than short-lived trends.

The 10 highest-priced wines

Between 2013 and 2025, the 10 highest-priced 750 ml bottles sold on iDealwine (one wine per estate) were:

1. 2006Musigny – Domaine Leroy (red) | (04 May 2022) €34,100

2. 2015 Romanée-Conti – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (red) | (27 April 2022) €31,620

4. 1990 Musigny – Domaine Georges Roumier (red) | (29 September 2021) €34,100

5. 2010 Montrachet – Domaine Leflaive (white) | (26 March 2025) €14,273

10. Oakville Napa Valley 1992 Screaming Eagle (rouge) | (25-01-2024) 11 250€

A few key takeaways emerge from these rankings:

  • Burgundy dominates, with six wines featured, and a podium led by Leroy, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and d’Auvenay.
  • The Rhône Valley features twice, with a single Northern Rhône appellation: Hermitage.
  • Two wines from beyond France makes the list, a mature Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Egon Müller and the first vintage (1992) of the legendary Californian Screaming Eagle.
  • No Bordeaux wines appear on the list. The legendary 1945 Château Mouton Rothschild – bearing the iconic ‘V’ label in tribute to the Allied victory in World War II – just misses out, ranking 11th (fetching €11,205 in December 2023).

It is also interesting to establish a second ranking comprising the 10 highest-priced 750ml bottles sold on iDealwine over the same period, this time allowing multiple entries from a same estate:

1. 2006 Musigny – Domaine Leroy (red) | (04 May 2022) €34,100

2. 2015 Romanée-Conti – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (red) | (27 April 2022) €31,620

3. 2006 Musigny – Domaine Leroy (red) | (28 July 2021) €28,244

4. 2015 Romanée-Conti – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (red) | (09 February 2022) €26,288

5. 2010 Romanée-Conti – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (red) | (07 September 2022) €26,164

6. 2006 Musigny – Domaine Leroy (red) | (21 May 2025) €25,416

7. 2005 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet – Domaine d’Auvenay (white) | (23 February 2022) €24,552

8. 2013 Chevalier-Montrachet – Domaine d’Auvenay (white) | (09 March 2022) €23,188

9. 2015 Romanée-Conti – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (red) | (24 August 2023) €22,912

10. 2013 Romanée-Conti – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (red) | (27 April 2022) €22,444

A few further insights stand out:

  • Burgundy is the only region represented in this top 10.
  • Seven of the highest-priced wines ever sold on iDealwine were auctioned in 2022, a record-breaking year for Burgundy prices.
  • Wines from Lalou Bize-Leroy stand out both in red, through Domaine Leroy, and in white, with the extremely rare grands crus from Domaine d’Auvenay (3.9 hectares). This legendary winemaker alone accounts for half of the rankings!
  • The other half is held by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

NB – the amount indicated can be affected by the level of VAT applied on the buyer’s commission due to their country of residence.

Leroy’s Musigny: an unrivalled benchmark

A Musigny from Domaine Leroy is a rare sight at auction – and for good reason. Production is infinitesimal, drawn from just 0.27 hectares of vines in this legendary grand cru.

The 2026 Musigny – iDealwine’s current record holder for the highest-priced bottle ever sold – was produced in just 603 bottles. That says it all! This iconic wine has appeared only three times at auction on iDealwine, in 2021, 2022 and 2025, achieving hammer prices of €25,416, €28,244 and €34,100.

In total, just nine bottles of Leroy Musigny have been up for graphs on iDealwine since 2013. Which gives you a clear sense of just how rare this wine is. Whenever it appears, it very often becomes the record of the year!

Romanée-Conti, the one and only

A collection of Romanée Conti bottles

Its name alone is enough to resonate with wine lovers around the world: Romanée-Conti.

Looking at the top 50 highest-priced wines over more than a decade of auctions – over 600 wines in total – the conclusion is clear: two out of every five bottles come from this Burgundian icon!

The vast majority of the estate’s highest-priced bottles originate from its famed 1.85-hectare vineyard, one of Burgundy’s most revered grands crus: Romanée-Conti itself. Acquired by the Prince de Conti in 1760, this tiny parcel changed hands several times after the French Revolution, when the estate was declared national property. The vineyard was uprooted in 1945 after years of resistance to phylloxera. As a result, no vintages were produced for five years, from 1946 to 1951.

Alongside Romanée-Conti, a handful of the estate’s other crus also feature in the top 50, including  La Tâche, Montrachet, Richebourg, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Gaudichots, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru cuvé Duvault-Blochet, Échézeaux and Grands Échézeaux. One wine stands out in particular: a 1935 Échézeaux from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which far exceeded expectations when it sold for €20,786 in December 2025, as part of a charity auction.

Which are the highest-priced estates in the world?

Looking again at the top 50 highest-priced wines over more than a decade of auctions, here are the estates that stand out for their consistent presence at the top…

Burgundy: Leroy (estate and négociant), d’Auvenay, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Henri Jayer, Leflaive, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Armand Rousseau, Ramonet, Comte Georges de Vogüé, Bertheau, Georges Roumier, Coche-Dury, Marquis d’Angerville, Comte Liger-Belair, René Engel (Domaine Eugénie), Bizot, Noëllat.

Bordeaux: Petrus, Margaux, Haut-Brion, Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, Lafleur, l’Evangile, Cheval Blanc, La Mission Haut-Brion, Angélus, Montrose, and Yquem.

The Rhone Valley: Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Jean-Louis Chave.

Champagne: Dom Pérignon, Salon.

Wines beyond France: Egon Müller (Germany), Screaming Eagle (USA).

Ultimately, only around thirty estates feature consistently across these rankings. These are the names that stand out time and again, whether for an exceptional tasting experience or as longer-term investments.

That said, many legendary wines do not appear among the world’s highest-priced bottles. Within France, major regions such as the Loire Valley and Jura are absent from the rankings. Beyond that, France is in a league of its own in this analysis, with just two exceptions: Egon Müller in the Mosel and Screaming Eagle in Napa. Elsewhere, historic wine-producing countries such as Spain and Italy are missing, as are New World producers from regions like the United States or Australia.
