The Michelin Guide Grape Selection: a first selection of Burgundian estates

The famous red Michelin Guide unveiled its first selection of estates from Burgundy, recognising the work of 94 producers, 62 of which have been awarded one, two or three Grapes. Having made its name in fine dining with its restaurant ratings, the celebrated Michelin Guide, founded in 1900 and now owner of the famous American guide, the Wine Advocate, has ventured into rating wine estates by unveiling its first ‘Grapes’ selection, the equivalent of the stars awarded to restaurants.

This first selection is dedicated to Burgundy

“This first MICHELIN Grape Selection reveals a Burgundy that upholds its heritage with unmistakable vitality. While the region remains one of the most highly structured in the world through its hierarchy of terroirs and appellations, our selection demonstrates that excellence is not defined solely by the prestige of a name. It is expressed above all through the precision of the work carried out both in the vineyard and in the cellar, and through the personality that each vintner brings to their estate in the pursuit of the highest quality.

The selection also highlights the dynamic nature of Burgundy, where multiple generations, backgrounds, and approaches coexist. Whether heirs to longstanding family traditions or founders of newer estates, each contributes to the evolution of this wine region as it continues to reinvent itself without losing sight of its identity. This diversity of profiles and expressions is what gives such exuberance to this first MICHELIN Grape Selection,” explains Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide.

The selection has already sparked plenty of interest, particularly among Asian and American wine lovers. While this new distinction provides an extra point of reference to guide wine lovers in their choices, it has also come under criticism. Like its counterpart for the world’s top restaurants, the guide’s decisions make waves – and already a few  headlines. Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, which has not submitted its wines to the press since 2020, has asked to be removed from the selection. Will this announcement from an estate that has only recently risen to the top echelon of Côte de Nuits greats take the shine off these brand-new selection? The answer to this looks to be debated for a while longer… In the meantime, we’ve noted that most of the distinguished estates regularly feature in iDealwine’s auction catalogues.
