Cornas appellation has once again been in the spotlight in recent days, with a 1988 vintage from Marcel Judge reaching €572 during the auction of 15th November on iDealwine. Let’s focus on the signatures that are currently making the buzz.
The Rhône is definitely a region to follow closely. To the North, the appellations Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie offer immense red wines with long ageing potentials, but also treasures in the production areas surrounding them. This is why Cornas continues to see its prices climb. This appellation, which has been booming since the beginning of the 1980s, triggers a growing appetite among Syrah lovers all over the world. We have already pointed out this trend several times since 2015, but the auctions that ended online on 15th November on iDealwine have brought a new – and masterful – illustration. It must be said that, within this appellation, several unfindable lots were for sale. For example, Cornas 1988, from Marcel Judge, is a bottle we very rarely come across on iDealwine! This officially retired winemaker only vinifies a tiny production, so the bottles bearing his name are true collector’s items. A professional from the United Kingdom finally won it after an auction battle that boosted the bottle to €572 (+172%). The 2000 of this same wine sold for €280 (+33%).
Another rarity is the Cornas from Noël Verset, a great name in the appellation, who has been retired since 2000 (he started making wine at the age of 12, in 1931!) and recently passed away. His 1990 bottle reached €535 (+47%) on 15th November. Beautiful auctions were also recorded on the Cornas from Domaine Auguste Clape: the 1989 has been shipped to the United States for €268 (+9%), while the 2010 reached €256 (+7%). Finally, Domaine Thierry Allemand also distinguished itself with its Reynard cuvée – one of the best climates of the appellation – which in the 2005 vintage saw its price increase of 71% to reach €192, while the 2009, sold for €182 (+26%). Notice that Noël Verset had precisely sold some plots of his precious domain to Thierry Allemand and Domaine Clape. To be continued, this story is probably not over yet for the renowned names of this appellation. But also for others nearby, like St. Joseph, where certain domains see their prices starting to soar.
