Big names, small prices: Bordeaux’ second wines offer a more accessible way to explore the grand crus. Once unknown, they are charming a new generation on wine enthusiasts today. Here is our selection of the 2025 vintage.
The entry way to the excellence of Bordeaux’ grand crus
Veritable ambassadors of the greatest properties, second wines have long since been more than simple alternatives; they are an integral part of the châteaux brand image. Far from being a blend of second-class wines, they are made with the same care given to the properties’ grand vin. The aim? To offer a loyal expression of the terroir and the property’s style in a more accessible way that lends itself to being opened earlier.
Second wines offer wine enthusiasts the possibility to enjoy the expertise of legendary names without paying the big prices. This form of democratisation of prestige appeals to a growing number of enthusiasts, especially since some châteaux have opted to forgo the term “second wine” in favour of names that are more evocative and closer to their grand vin.
This movement has created a notable revival on the market. Long thrown into the shadows of the premier cru classés at auction, second wines are seeing their prices rise. The quality of the wines lead collectors and connoisseurs to add them to their collections, given that they are sound investments.
In the table below, you’ll find the iDealwine Team’s selection of second wines from this year’s En Primeur campaign with critics’ ratings alongside to help you with your choice.
