White Wines for a Steal – under €20 / £20 / $20
Summer is not over yet, and there is still some as fresco entertainment to be done! You’ll be spoilt for choice with iDealwine’s extensive selection of white wines under €20. Perfect for enjoying with friends, on a terrasse, or with a light summer dish – we’ve rounded up our favourites: the little-known (but not for much longer) Mas d’Espanet and its Freesia cuvée (€8). The wine is certified biodynamic and enjoys a very cool terroir adjacent to the Cévennes natural park and its 8000 hectares of woods. A blend of Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, it will make for a perfect pairing with a fish dish or drink by itself before dinner. Other cuvées from the same estate are also available, which we highly recommend.
Another hidden gem at a very reasonable price is the Gemini vintage from Clos Uroulat, a blend of dry Petit and Gros Manseng. A gorgeous, expressive dry white with exotic aromas -serve with smoked salmon canapés or a spicy noodle dish.
Moving to Muscadet, La Louvetrie is a striking Melon de Bourgone varietal, made by one of the region’s leading figures, the great Jo Landron. Sharp, with a long finish and remarkable precision for this price level. A true gem!
In Burgundy, we recommend Clotilde Davenne’s Aligotés, vibrant wines with very little sulphur, aged in vats. Aromatic concentration and complexity are to be found in these wines. If your budget stretches further, check out her range of Chablis, produced from grapes bought in from the region rather than vinifying her own–some special and even Grand Cru Chablis for a special occasion.
Cuvée G from Château Guiraud 2020 is a dry wine made from 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, a lively and aromatic wine matured in oak barrels which have contained Sauternes during their maturation. Superb value that will get you 10% off when you purchase a case of six bottles.
All the way from Santorini in Greece, there’s more to this island than sunsets and picturesque whitewashed villages (though those are certainly worth it too!) – we’re talking about our favourite Santorini wine, produced by Tetramythos. We love their Retsina Amphore wine, 100% Roditis, a native grape variety matured in amphorae for six months. The wine is floral and juicy, a high quality that is rare in this price range.
