Uniquely Burgundy | A timeless region

Burgundy owes its worldwide reputation to the powerful viticultural history that it passes on so proudly and elegantly. Of course, the price of its produce is enough to intimidate many. However, we should recognise that such sums are largely brought by the remarkable quality and diversity of its climats, offering endless nuances to the wine enthusiast in perennial quest of new discoveries.

Burgundy’s big names

Many are those who seek all that is new. We absolutely share this line of thinking! However, we are still passionate about the roots of France’s viticultural tradition…a tradition that this Burgundy sale honours. For this reason, you will find must-have domains like Louis Latour, which has been working the greatest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune for eleven generations. Why not celebrate a special occasion with a magnum of 2018 Beaune Premier Cru Hugues et Louis Bétault? Those looking for the best of the best should look to Louis Jadot and Domaine Leroy. If it’s a mature vintage you’re after, Louis Jadot’s 2005 Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis, already nicely evolved, might be the perfect bottle for you. As for Lalou Bize-Leroy’s mythical, biodynamic domain, it shines in this sale with the number of cuvées available (Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Combottes…). Our little favourite is a lively and complex Aligoté (notes of hazelnut, almond, and hawthorn). A lovely introduction to the domain’s know-how and to this up-and-coming grape variety.

Our safe bets

Burgundy is often presented as the most financially inaccessible region. However, that isn’t always the case, and this is clear in the case of Paul Pillot, who tends no less than 6 premier cru terroirs in Chassagne-Montrachet. Vintages from both 2004 (Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jean) and 2016 (Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru La Grande Montagne) mean that you have the choice of bottles to enjoy now or something to age for a while in the cellar. One thing is for sure, there’s no need to hesitate when faced with these white wines with their heavenly delicacy. It’s also worth considering Guffens-Heynen, a longstanding partner domain, whose range of cuvées (Pouilly-Fuissé, Mâcon-Pierreclos, Saint-Véran) in their recent vintages will be sure to delight you. Do you have a soft spot for Pinot Noir? Rest assured that you, too, will find something you love in this sale. Domaine Ramonet’s reds are available in several cuvées, beautiful examples of what this grape variety can produce. These can be also be found in vintages that are ready to be opened, shared, and enjoyed!

New faces at iDealwine

There are some new partner domains at the heart of this sale as well. What a pleasure to discover new faces in the midst of a region where established names are myriad. Make the most of it, as the prices are (for now!) still very affordable! Clos des Vignes du Maynes is a domain which, thanks to its biodynamic growing and natural vinification, has never seen chemical intervention. In both red and white, its 2018 vintage is to be tried without delay. Another new partner, Domaine des Rouges Queues is nestled at the heart of the Maranges hills and also grows organically and biodynamically. The Maranges Premier Cru La Fussières and the Santenay from here are lovely cuvées. It is evident that, even in a region as traditional as Burgundy, organic and biodynamic viticulture is really catching on. Thus, in the same vein, we have also welcomed Domaine Pattes Loup, Heresz Mazzinni and Didon into our network.
