Top auction picks | Private collection

Let’s head down to the cellar of this afficionados’ club, where a passion for Bordeaux couldn’t be clearer. Featured in this private collection are such bottles as a 1990 Haut-Brion, a 2001 Château Latour, and a 1996 Mouton Rothschild.

The cellar of a connoisseurs’ club

When you’re really into wine, you know that sharing a bottle is all the more special when your guests enjoy the same passion. The private collection we have for you comes from a club of wine connoisseurs…meaning their cellar is full to the brim with fine signatures that you now have access to.

Their bottles have been kept thus far in a natural, underground cellar at a perfect temperature for ageing wine. The club has chosen to sell on many of its Bordeaux wines, with various sources including primeur cuvées and traders on the Place de Bordeaux marketplace. Within their penchant for this classic region, you’ll find an eclectic mix that will have you covered for tasting sessions and delicious dinners alike.

A broad left bank selection

From the left bank, this selection features 1,000 lots shared between several prestigious appellations, ranging from 1982 to 2014, including the very fine vintages of 1989, 1990, 2000 and 2010. The must-haves are of course the 1990 Haut-Brion (in lots of different sizes, up to six bottles), the Margaux in its mature vintages (1993) as well as more recent ones (2012), the marvellous 1990 Lafite Rothschild and the 2001 Château Latour. There is also a wide range of Château Mouton Rothschild wines up for auction with labels designed each year by a different artist, a project initiated by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1945. This cuvée is available in 49 different lots (up to six and even 12 bottles) in the 1990, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, and 2006 vintages…The choice is yours!

From Saint-Julien, don’t miss out on bottles from these highly reputed properties: Beychevelle, Léoville Las Cases, Ducru Beaucaillou, as well as Cos d’Estournel in Saint-Estèphe. Looking for bottles with a lower price tag? Go for Citran 2011, Maucaillou 2009, Latour-Martillac 1999 or La Sirène de Giscours 2012, from the estate’s younger vines.

The right bank, between Pomerol and Saint-Emilion

On the right bank, the selection is rarer with nearly 180 lots on sale. A vintage not to be missed? 2015, which holds a new record following the excellent 2009 and 2010 vintages that preceded correct, average or even mediocre ones. All the conditions were there to produce a great year: abundant winter rain to strengthen the vines during the heat peaks, a fairly early spring, a hot and dry July, but not as scorching as in 2003 or 2009, and fairly dry August and September, but without excessive heat. iDealwine gave a score of 18/20 to this vintage of fruity and intense red wines, with supple tannins and perfect balance, made for ageing. Don’t miss Château la Fleur Petrus, Clos de l’Oratoire or Château Pavie Macquin.

The big shots of the right bank? These are of course Figeac (2011 and 2015), Cheval Blanc (1994 and 2004) and Angélus (1989 and 2013) in Saint-Emilion, as well as Château l’Évangile (2000, 2005, 2006 and 2012) and Château La Conseillante (2003, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015) in Pomerol.

If you’re also looking for a more pleasing price, Chateau Nénin is a classic Pomerol and, although affordable in its early years, has very good ageing potential. Château Beau-Séjour Bécot produces a rich, lively wine that softens with age, and lots of Château Canon la Gaffelière will be a good opportunity for home chefs to pair with a characterful meat-based dish, such as roast quail.

Happy bidding! 😊
