The most expensive wines of the year…so far!

They say that slow and steady wins the race, but that’s not really the case in the auction world. We’re halfway through the year, and there have already been some record-breaking bids at iDealwine. A look at the top 50 most expensive bottles from January to July will give you a good idea of which domains and regions are taking the lead.

Records that can’t stop being broken

The results recorded in 2021 were already impressive, with a 2006 Musigny from Domaine Leroy selling for a top bid of €28,244. You’d think the value of this bottle couldn’t go up any further, but apparently the sky is the limit when it comes to Burgundy’s rarest produce; the same cuvée went under the hammer for €33,000 (including fees) earlier this year. We’ve observed a similar leap for the second place bottle, too, with a difference in vintage this time. In 2021, a bottle of 1990 Romanée-Conti fetched €20,998, whilst a much more recent vintage of the same cru – the 2015 – sold for €31,620 since. This ranking, which features just one bottle from each domain (you get to see a more diverse range of estates that way), features four bottles that have fetched over €10k, and fifteen that got a top bid exceeding €5k. And for a bit of extra information, there’s a 50/50 split between the top bottles that went to French bidders and those won by overseas clients.

Burgundy leads, other regions catching up

Half of the bottles in this top 50 hale from Burgundian vineyards, showcasing the region’s ability to hold on firmly to its reigning position at auction. Having said this, there have been some impressive performances from other wine regions so far this year, with notably high bids for a few Rhône and Languedoc wines. In fact, Jean-Louis Chave features in fifth place, whilst the sixth spot is occupied by the ever-climbing Grange des Pères who has already jumped three places since 2021. Chave’s hammer price is not to be overlooked, either, since the 2003 Cathelin cuvée fetched €7,936 compared to the €5,403 for its 2000 sibling last year. Just a couple of ranks later we find an appearance from Champagne, with Dom Pérignon’s 1971 P3 Plénitude cuvée.
