Private Collection | A passion inspired by a legend

This auction is the chance to discover the collection of an enthusiast whose passion for wine began upon tasting the exquisite 1929 Yquem. From this very same icon, the 1997 and 2005 vintages are up for bidding, as well as other magnificent lots from Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhône.

This collector’s passion for wine began with a tasting that would stay etched in his mind. He told us, “Wine wasn’t totally foreign to me, as my grandfather was a merchant in Bordeaux. One day, when I was still quite young, he brought a spectacular bottle; a 1929 Yquem, this being considered a ‘vintage of the century’ for Sauternes…and this is a wine I haven’t forgotten. In fact, I was so taken by it that I decided from that day to develop my passion for wine; I learnt how to taste and appreciate it, also meeting lots of producers. My family origins got me started with Bordeaux, and I got into the habit of buying primeurs bottles, before expanding my horizons to the Rhône valley and other regions. This all happened throughout the 1990s”. All of the bottles have been kept in a professional cellar, with temperature and humidity controls.

Mature vintages from exceptional domains

Our collector’s personal tastes were the driving force for putting this cellar together, having built up bottles based on favourite cuvées and meetings with vignerons. “I only purchased wines I’d like to drink, and my friends and family haven’t been disappointed! I reached a point, however, when I realised that I couldn’t drink all of it, even with the help of some very willing guests. I’ve also become more interested in different kinds of domains, hence why I’m selling part of my collection.” Up for auction is a stunning range of exceptional vintages from top domains: 1947 Château Pavie, 1953 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, 1959 Grands-Echezeaux from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, 1982 and 2010 Haut-Brion, 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild, and 1995 Château Ausone are some of the highlights.

Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône, Loire

As you can tell by our little selection above, this is an auction bursting with beautiful Bordeaux names. A particular fan of Château Léoville Las Cases, our collector is putting a dozen bottles from this estate up for auction. Among the Pomerol crus are La Conseillante, Bel Air, Trotanoy, Lafleur, and Latour. From Burgundy, you’ll find lots from Domaine des Lambrays, Bernard Dugat-Py, Comtes Georges de Vogüé, and Domaine Lafarge. Two bottles from Domaine Arnaud are also available, the 2009 Meursault and the 2008 Meursault Les Petits Charrons. From the Rhône, the 2007 and 2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées from Château Rayas are regional stars, as well as the Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, and Saint-Joseph cuvées. Finally, heading to the Loire valley, we have cuvées from the famous Roches Neuves and the superb Clos Rougeard to round off this parade of special signatures.
