Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges expands

Hospices de nuits vineyard

Following several donations, the Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges vineyard holdings have grown from 12.5 to 13.7 hectares. Let’s take a closer look.

First wave of donations: 1990s and early 2000s

To begin, close to one hectare of vines, spread across several parcels, was generously bequeathed by Georges and Georgette Jeanniard,  siblings from Nuits-Saint-Georges with no direct heirs. Their gift, made to the Domaine des Hospices in the 1990s and early 2000s, reflects a deep attachment to their native terroir. For several years, these vines were farmed by Domaine Jean Chauvenet under a tenancy agreement, before returning to the Hospices’ estate in 2025. The estate thus gained three additional climats:

  • 1,371 square metres of Nuits-Saint-Georges Village (red), Aux Saint-Julien. These vines will form part of the Claude Poyen cuvée, which already includes grapes from this terroir.
  • 4,688 square metres of Nuits-Saint-Georges Village (red), Aux Saint- Jacques. This climat will give rise to an entirely new village-level cuvée.
  • 22.88 square metres of Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru (red), Les Perrières. This brings the number of Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Crus represented in the auction to ten.

A second and more recent donation from the Trapet family

A further bequest from the Trapet sisters, Marie-Aleth and Marie-Dominique, concerns additional vines that will remain under lease for several years before ultimately passing to the Hospices estate upon the owners’ death. The additional parcels comprise:

  • 2,500 square metres of Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru (red) Les Damodes, the northernmost premier cru in the appellation. This donation will give rise to a new cuvée bearing the name of Michel Trapet, in tribute to the vines’ former owner.
  • 800 square metres of Nuits-Saint-Georges Village (red) Les Damodes. Yes, this is not an error, the climat des Damodes is expressed at both Village and Premier Cru level.
  • 700 square metres of Nuits-Saint-Georges Village (red) Aux Saint-Jacques. Grapes from this parcel will contribute to the Nuits-Saint-Georges Village Saint-Jacques cuvée.

With these successive parcel bequests, the total vineyard area held by the Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges now amounts to 13.734 hectares.
