Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most prestigious properties in Pauillac. But what is a bottle worth? And for those that collect each vintage with their labels that are illustrated each year by a renowned artist, how much is a vertical collection (of several vintage) worth?

A difficult to determine price estimate

It’s not easy to establish a price estimate for these kinds of lots! For example, a vertical consisting of 1945 to 2008 Mouton Rothschild was sold in 2012 at auction in Amsterdam for €51,750. At the time of the auction, the estimated value of the wines on iDealwine was €42,495, illusting the added value that a vertical collection brings. At the same time, the 2012 result is significantly lower compared to that achieved by a similar batch (1945 to 2005), which was sold for €80,500 in Paris in September 2011.

However, these prices are not purely a result of market trends, but also of the condition of the bottles and how they were stored. Prices are also closely related to the presence of wealthy bidders willing to pay a premium for a vertical collection, especially when two or more are bidding against each other.

A vintage vertical of the same wine is a rare and sought-after collection item. Many collectors will therefore patiently collect different vintages of the same wine, hoping to eventually profit from the resale of the batch as a whole. A quick look at Château Mouton-Rothschild’s history

Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bough the château in 1853 but it gain legendary status in 1922 when Baron Philippe de Rothschild was at the helm. At just 21 years old, motivated by many original ideas, he decided to dedicate his life to creating a global name for his wine which had always shone in Bordeaux.

In 1924, the property decided to bottle its own wine from the time, adding “mise en bouteilles intégrale au château” to the label. Up until this time, the wine traders in Bordeaux would bottle the wines for the chaâteaux. To mark the end of the Second World War in 1945, Château Mouton-Rothschild added the “V” of Victory to its labels, which started its trend of releasing a new label with each new vintage.

When tasted, the majority of these Mouton Rothschild vintages are opulent and rich, with great depth, highlighted by remarkable aromatic complexity, ranging from blackcurrants and roasted coffee, to mint and leather.
