Maximilian Riedel met Angélique de Lencquesaing on a Parisian balcony to talk all things wine. As the 11th generation of the Riedel family known all over the world for producing the finest wine glasses, Maximilian is a star of the wine world.
Riedel – Glasses made for grape varieties
Glass-making knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation in the Riedel family and their online shop is bursting at the seams with glasses produced specifically for many of the world’s different grape varieties.
“It was the wine industry that invited us to not only make pretty and beautiful glasses, but tools, instruments to showcase their wines to their customers,” Maximilian explains. “So, we’re the link between the bottle and our senses. In between, you have the loudspeaker, which is the verre Riedel [Riedel glass].”
It’s impossible to live without wine
It wouldn’t a chat with iDealwine if we didn’t talk more in depth about wine and the conversion quickly turned wine auctions, something that we know inside out here at iDealwine. “I buy at auction for many reasons,” says Maximilian. “First, auctions allow you access to wines that maybe you don’t have access to. Second, if you have a reliable source, you’re guaranteed that the wine is in good condition… And of course, third, let’s be honest, I always try to make a deal, you know? So, at auctions, sometimes you’re very lucky that you have … access to a particular vintage of a wine. … I love to buy at auctions.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves!
Maximilian and Angélique also discuss how to build an amazing collection, passing on the family passion for glass and wine, and a tour of Champagne. Click below to watch the full interview (in English with French subtitles) which concludes with some passionate quick-fire questions.
