A staple of summer markets from early June through to the end of September, melon stands out as the season’s defining fruit. Juicy, fragrant and effortlessly refreshing, it brings brightness and generosity to a starter, and just as naturally rounds off a meal with a soft, sweet finish. Here are a few ideas for pairing melon throughout the meal, from starter to dessert.
Which wine to serve with melon as a starter?
Port, Pineau des Charentes… what should you drink with a starter of ‘melon with Port’?
Love it or loathe it… in France, melon with Port wine is so deeply ingrained that it can feel almost unthinkable to serve this fruit with anything else. That said, the iDealwine team is always keen to challenge convention. This, however, was not the easiest pairing to rethink. Melon is a highly aromatic fruit with a high water content, which makes balance tricky. The key is to find a wine with enough sweetness to match the fruit, alongside fruit-driven or floral aromas that complement rather than overpower it. In this context, a young, fruit-forward Port can work well with this starter. For those who are particularly fond of Port, and wish to stay within the same family of fortified wines, Pineau des Charentes offers an interesting option, its aromatic finesse pairing neatly with the fruit. This is, after all, a well-established match in its home region of Poitou-Charentes.
Otherwise, Roussillon provides some appealing alternatives, particularly with vins doux naturels (fortified sweet wines) such as Maury, Banyuls and Rivesaltes.
What wine to serve with melon and cured ham?
If you enjoy (and we completely understand) pairing melon with a slice of cured ham as a starter, the perfect sweet-and-savoury contrast, you can also turn to off-dry white wines, or even dry styles with pronounced aromatics. Look for wines with generous expressive fruit notes such as Vouvray, Montlouis, Muscadet, Jurançon or Gewurztraminer, which can both complement the sweet-salty balance and stand up to the melon’s aromatic intensity.
What wine to serve with a melon salad?
Melon has become a staple in composed salads, its sweetness and fruit balancing the saltiness of other ingredients, whether vegetables, cheese or pulses. For these dishes, a fruit-driven rosé with a light structure, such as those from Provence (Côtes de Provence, Baux de Provence or IGP Méditerranée), works particularly well.
If you prefer white wine, look to southern styles with more breadth and generosity, such as Côtes-du-Rhône whites or whites from Provence and Corsica.
Sparkling wines can also be a strong option, their freshness and acidity bringing energy to the dish without overwhelming its flavours. A Crémant de Loire is especially well suited, as Chenin Blanc offers a fruit profile and generosity that align nicely with melon.

What wine to serve with melon for dessert?
To round off a meal on a sweet note, melon pairs well with a late-harvest Gewurztraminer, a wine with powerful aromatics that nonetheless retains finesse and elegance. If the melon is served alongside pastries or in a creamy tart, opt for a Sauternes or Barsac, with their pastry-like and exotic notes. A fresher vintage, such as 2021, is preferable to avoid excessive sweetness.
More generally, it is often best to keep things simple and choose easy-drinking, convivial wines. Have a favourite pairing of your own? We’d love to hear your suggestions.
3 tips for choosing the perfect melon
Here are a few simple pointers to help you pick the right melon and make the best possible pairings. First, pick it up. The heavier it feels, the sweeter and more flavourful it is likely to be. Next, check the stem, also known as the pécou. If it comes away easily, that is a good sign. Finally, smell the base of the melon. If the aroma is sweet and fragrant, it is perfectly ripe. Enjoy!
