Louis Roederer has Burgundy in its sights

Louis Roederer vineyards

Louis Roederer is currently in negotiations to acquire an exceptional estate in Burgundy: Domaine Pierre Damoy located in Gevrey-Chambertin covers eight hectares, of which 10% hold grand cru status. After Champagne, the Rhône Valley, Provence, Bordeaux, California, and the Duoro Valley, Roederer is setting is sights on Burgundy.

Domaine Pierre Damoy

Julien Damoy, a farmer’s son, founded a flourishing greengrocer’s shop in the 1930s, which reached its heights in 1936. A passionate wine enthusiast, he made the bold choice to buy a few hectares of vines during the phylloxera crisis. A visionary gamble, it was the start of a family adventure that continues today with Pierre Damoy, representing the fifth generation of winemakers.

Located at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, the estate covers about eight hectares of exceptional vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin with prestigious grand crus such as Chapelle-Chambertin,  Chambertin and Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze. Following the same precise approach all these years, Pierre Damoy favours quality over quantity. The old vines (most were planted in the 1920s) reveal the depth of the terroirs where they grow. In the winery, this philosophy translates to long vatting and a marked maturation with the percentage of new barrels reaching 80% for Clos-de-Bèze wines, giving them structure, intensity and good ageing potential.

Roederer Collection

Founded in 1776 in Reims, the Champagne house Louis Roederer is one of the last great houses to still be independent and family owned. Frédéric Rouzaud is at the helm, the seventh generation of the family to run the house. Covering 250 hectares of which 135 are certified organic, Louis Roederer looks after its vines in a way that deeply respects the environment. Here, Mother Nature dictates the rhythm of the work, and each wine faithfully reflects its Champagne terroir of origin.

The Roederer Collection brings together merchant trading houses and independent producers, which all share the same vision. Each of the estates brings their own story, roots and knowledge to the table to work in a way that respects the environment, thereby helping to bring a multitude of terroirs and identities to life, in keeping with the values of the Roederer Collection.

The collection consists of Louis Roederer and Deutz Champagnes as well as the Bordeaux properties of Château de Pez and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. It also includes Delas Frères in Tain-l’Hermitage, the Rhône Valley, Domaines Ott in Provence and Ramos Pinto in Porto. And finally, there are five estates in California: Diamond Creek Vineyards, Domaine Anderson, Merry Edwards Winery, Roederer Estate and Scharffenberger.

A Burgundian estate would therefore enrich Roederer’s offering, bringing new terroirs to the table.
