What is the value of Château Mouton Rothschild wines at the moment?

1959 Château Mouton-Rothschild bottle

Château Mouton Rothschild holds a unique place in the pantheon of fine wines. Pauillac’s premier cru classé enjoys a long and rich history, built by a number of generations of notable figures who have deeply influenced the property’s fortune.

The figure of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who took over the estate at the age of 21 in 1922, is undeniably one of the most fascinating. He was the brainchild behind many innovations, beginning with bottling at the property in 1924 to guarantee the unabated quality of the wines. He also commissioned a different artist each year to create a piece artwork to adorn the wine’s labels.

The Rothschild family, renowned around the world for its extraordinary collection, added a new prism to its treasure trove over the years by creating a “vertical” of artwork by judiciously-chosen artists at the top of their game at the time. Cocteau, Chagall, Picasso, Souvenirs, Francis Bacon and Balthus are but a few of the illustrious names who have created labels for the property’s wines over the vintages.

Many wine enthusiasts in turn want to own these bottles, not only for their intrinsic quality but also for the artwork itself, which began appearing on labels in 1945 to celebrate the end of the Second World War.

The Château Mouton Rothschild remains in high demand today, maintaining its position as one of the most coveted Bordeaux producers. It continues to vinify its wine with the utmost care in the new winery which opened its doors in 2013 and was designed by Richard Peduzzi and architect Bernard Mazières.

What about these wines’ price estimates?

Château Mouton Rothschild’s wines have not been sheltered from the inflections in the grand cru market in recent years.

After a significant rise that peaked in 2022, the wines returned to more reasonable levels in 2024. Since the first few months of 2025, Mouton Rothschild’s legendary vintages have started to see their prices climb again. This is especially true of the symbolic 2000 vintage In 2022, its iDealwine Price Estate reached €1,850.

Nowadays, its price estimates sits at around €1,502, a figure confirmed by September’s auctions. This is a stabilisation in price, but it is a remarkable long-term appreciation in value in relation to its En Primeur price, even when taking inflation into account. When it was sold as En Primeur wine in 2001, the 2000 Château Mouton Rothschild had a price tag of €210. When it was released onto the general market in 2003, its iDealwine price estimate was €330. Inflation since 2003 is about 50%, but in spite of that, the price of the wine has tripled in this time.

Succes for Château Mouton Rothschild’s magnums at iDealwine auctions

In September, no less than 111 Château Mouton-Rothschild lots were auctioned on iDealwine, which is the equivalent to 175 bottles. Amongst these, a number of vintages were available in magnum format. Wine enthusiasts welcomed them with open arms. The Pauillac premier cru classé in this format reached €1,377 for the 2010 vintage (+8% in comparison to the iDealwine Price Estimated for a magnum). At the same time, standard bottles of 2010 Mouton-Rothschild were auctioned for a stable price of €639. Last month’s auctions also recorded a rise in bottle prices for other vintages. 2005 reached €1,377 (+15%), 2006 €1,033 (+21%), 2008 €1,002 (+18%) and 2012 also reached the same price (+14%). All the vintages over 10 years surpassed the €1,000 mark.

A larger, rare format was also adorned with success at auction last month. A 1989 double magnum went under the hammer for €1,941, 14% above its standard bottle price estimate. These results confirm the appeal of buying Bordeaux grand crus in these larger formats that become collectable items in the medium term. Aside from the fact that their quality will only be multiplied by being in a magnum or larger bottle, placing them in the quiet, sheltered confines of a cellar for several years will only bolster their value.
