Our rankings of the best Chablis wines

four bottles of Raveneau from the Chablis appellation

Turning our attention to the northern reaches of Burgundy, Chablis’ vineyards stand proud, radiant with global renown. Each year, they yield an exceptional selection of prestigious wines that enliven the secondary market. In the first half of 2025, no fewer than 2,491 bottles of Chablis were sold at auction.

It’s worth noting that the secondary market focuses largely on the appellation’s most refined production – the grands crus. Though they cover barely 2% of Chablis’ total area under vine, they account for 28% of all bottles sold at auction. Yet what makes Chablis particularly compelling is the broad diversity of its wines and producers. This is an appellation of many expressions, offering a fascinating spectrum of styles and price points. For the grands crus alone, the average auction price reached €223, only slightly higher than the overall average for Burgundy white wines. The Top 10, however, soar far higher.

Raveneau shines bright at the top of the rankings

In the Chablis universe, Domaine Raveneau stands head and shoulders above all other producers. Its Blanchot Grand Cru, the sole representative of the appellation in the Top 20 highest-priced white Burgundy wines, fetched €1,565 for the 1990 vintage. Close behind is the estate’s Clos Grand Cru, which has also repeatedly surpassed the €1,000 mark. Among the 23 bottles of Clos sold at auction, the average price nearly touches that threshold, at €950. This grand cru’s highest priced bottle is the 2008 vintage, which sold for €1,302.

The Chablis hierarchy is clear in the rankings, with grands crus well represented, including Grenouilles (Droin, no. 4), Moutonne (Albert Bichot, no. 5), and Les Preuses (William Fèvre, no. 6). Yet premier crus also hold their own in this rankings – notably the Montée de Tonnerre Premier Cru from Louis Michel et Fils (no. 3), which sold for €202.

The top 10 highest-priced Chablis wines favour mature vintages, a slight exception in Burgundy where wines typically don’t need many years before their value appreciates. In Chablis, the pace is different: six out of 10 bottles are aged over 10 years (vintages prior to 2015). The wines here simply need longer to increase in value.

A meaningful environmental commitment

In northern Burgundy, it is well known how costly it is for winemakers to convert their vineyards to organic practices. The region’s northerly location means that, more often than elsewhere, successive weather hazards strike, including hailstorms, frost and diseases that can destroy swathes of the harvest. Among the Top 10, 2 producers follow conventional methods, two have adopted sustainable practices, five adhere to organic principles, and one is fully committed to biodynamic viticulture. This is a commitment that carries serious weight but is warmly welcomed by the market. As a matter of fact, these wines have found strong demand outside of France, particularly in Europe (Portugal, Germany, Italy, and Latvia) and Asia (South Korea and Hong Kong), with just two French buyers in the rankings.
