Sancerre fan? Have you tried Menetou-Salon?

Menetou-Salon village

When wine lovers think of Sauvignon Blanc from the Centre-Loire, one name immediately comes to mind: Sancerre! Yet just a few kilometres away, another appellation shares many of its foundations while offering a different interpretation of the terroir; its name is Menetou-Salon. This Loire Valley gem, while modest in size, stands out for the finesse and elegance of its wines, recognised as an AOC since 1959.

The Menetou-Salon terroir is distinctive: limestone soils dotted with oyster fossils blend seamlessly with Kimmeridgian marls, creating a complexity that carries through into every bottle. This natural richness gives rise to vibrant, mineral-driven whites, where Menetou-Salon, made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, fully expresses its typicity. Red and rosé wines, meanwhile, are crafted from Pinot Noir, offering subtle red fruit aromas and a beautifully balanced structure.

For novices and seasoned wine lovers alike, Menetou-Salon is far more than just another appellation, it’s a discovery not to be missed within the Loire Valley winemaking landscape. Whether through its delicate, expressive whites or its generous reds marked by freshness, each wine reflects the singular character and beauty of its terroir.

The historical heritage of Menetou-Salon

Menetou-Salon has a rich history, rooted in centuries of viticultural tradition. This Loire Valley terroir traces its origins back to Antiquity, with the earliest recorded references to vine cultivation in the region dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Charters from 1063, 1097 and 1100 show that local lords were already donating vineyards to religious orders, notably the Abbey of Saint-Sulpice-lès-Bourges. One particularly notable episode dates from 1190, when Hugues de Vèvre, Lord of Menetou-Salon, granted land and vineyards to the Abbey of Loroy, highlighting the strategic importance of viticulture in the Seigneurie at the time. A legacy that has endured ever since.

The history of Menetou-Salon was also shaped by influential figures such as Jacques Cœur, the renowned treasurer to King Charles VII. Visionary merchant and a champion of his native terroir, he played a key role in enhancing the reputation of Menetou wines. His close ties with the royal court helped establish their prestige, which continued to grow over the centuries, securing their place within France’s great wine heritage.

Over time, the appellation has achieved remarkable stability. Today, it covers around 600 hectares, evenly spread across several communes surrounding Menetou-Salon. Much of this identity is shaped by its distinctive geology. Formed by an ancient inland sea during the Mesozoic era, the soils are rich in limestone and oyster fossils. This unique terroir lends the wines their mineral structure and characteristic elegance, making Menetou-Salon one of the Loire Valley’s hidden gems.

In 1959, Menetou-Salon was granted Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status, recognising centuries of expertise rooted in respect for the terroir. Today, the appellation continues to combine tradition with carefully considered innovation, preserving the quality and identity that define the appellation. Discovering Menetou-Salon is, in many ways, a journey through time. An experience that allows you to savour a living heritage, expressed in every vineyard parcel and every cuvée.

The style of Menetou-Salon wines

Summing up this authentic Loire appellation in just a few lines is no easy task. Two grape varieties define the appellation: Sauvignon Blanc, which shapes the whites, and Pinot Noir, the signature of the red and rosé wines. Menetou-Salon white wines stand out for their pale colour with bright highlights and a particularly expressive aromatic profile, combining floral and fruit notes in a pure expression of their terroir.

On the nose, they typically reveal citrus and white flower aromas, sometimes complemented by a subtle hint of spice. In certain vintages, a distinct mineral edge emerges, reflecting the limestone and marl subsoils that characterise the appellation. On the palate, freshness and perceptible acidity bring precision and lift, supported by fine length and finesse. This makes Menetou-Salon Sauvignon Blanc a natural partner for a wide range of delicate dishes, fully expressing its gastronomic character.

The red wines, meanwhile, showcase the finesse of Pinot Noir. Their ruby hue leads into aromas of cherry, ripe plum and, at times, lightly stewed fruit encapsulating their complexity. Subtle spicy nuances bring added subtlety to this already delightful aromatic profile. On the palate, these wines are supple and well balanced, with a light structure that makes them immediately appealing. Yet they should not be underestimated! Beneath this approachability lies a genuine capacity to evolve with age.

And what of Menetou-Salon rosé wines? They combine freshness with delicacy, offering a harmonious aromatic profile where fruit and finesse are held together by vibrant acidity. This perfect balance of aromatic intensity and lightness defines their style, making them as enjoyable in their youth as they are with a little time in bottle.

Taken as a whole, Menetou-Salon wines offer a clear expression of their Loire terroir and the expertise of local winemakers. Approachable in their youth yet capable of developing over time, they are increasingly recognised as one of the rising appellations of the Centre-Val de Loire.

Leading estates in Menetou-Salon

Menetou-Salon reveals its full potential through a number of estates that embody both the authenticity and diversity of the appellation. Among them, Domaine Henry Pellé stands out for wines that express their terroir with precision and clarity.

In 2023, we tasted a vertical of fourteen white vintages (2007 to 2020), highlighting marked variations across both vintages and vineyard sites: Morogues, Les Blanchais, Les Vignes du Ratier and Le Carroir. Cooler vintages showed freshness and pronounced mineral tension, while warmer years produced riper wines, with citrus-driven profiles and greater depth. One constant remained throughout: remarkable aromatic purity.

Paul-Henry Pellé, who has led the estate since 2006 as the fourth generation, builds on strong foundations: rigorous training (notably with Hubert Lamy and Benjamin Leroux), deep respect for the soils and a long-standing family tradition. His partner Marie oversees the vineyard, introducing biodynamic practices and gradually implementing agroforestry along with sheep grazing between the rows, tree planting to provide shade, and measures designed to enhance biodiversity and preserve freshness.

It’s hard not to be drawn in by the charm of Menetou-Salon wines, whose freshness and elegance make them particularly compelling at the table. Whether white, red or rosé, they have a natural ability to elevate a wide range of dishes through refined and distinctly brilliant food pairings.

Menetou-Salon whites, with their citrus and white flower aromatics and lively acidity, are a natural match for seafood and shellfish such as langoustines or oysters. They are equally at ease alongside delicate fish or more subtle dishes such as a porcini risotto, where their precision brings balance and lift. When it comes to cheese, classic Loire goat’s cheeses such as Crottin de Chavignol or Valençay form particularly harmonious pairings. For a more unexpected combination, veal with girolles highlights their finesse beautifully.

The reds, shaped by Pinot Noir, combine lightness with fine tannins, making them especially suited to generous, flavourful dishes. Grilled meats, white meats in sauce, tapas or pâté en croûte all pair naturally with their supple structure. More unexpectedly, they also work beautifully with certain fish in sauce, creating pairings that are both original and well balanced.

As for the rosé wines, their freshness and fruit-driven character make them ideal for summer meals. They pair effortlessly with light summer starters, salads, simple dishes or delicate charcuterie, where their balance of fruit and freshness is particularly appealing.

With its remarkable versatility, Menetou-Salon lends itself effortlessly to the table, from the apéritif through to more elaborate dishes, all while showcasing the typicity and finesse of its Centre-Val de Loire terroir.

The Menetou-Salon name evokes a natural balance between history, terroir and winemaking know-how. The appellation’s whites, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, stand out for their freshness and precision, while the Pinot Noir-based reds offer subtle, refined profiles that appeal to discerning wine lovers.

The charm of these wines lies in how naturally they integrate into a wide range of food pairings. Expressing both the finesse and singularity of their terroir, they adapt effortlessly to different tables, enhancing each meal with a genuinely authentic tasting experience.
