Top auction picks | A private collection

What treasures does this collection have in store?

Our consignor has been an enthusiast and collector for 20 years, carrying a passion they first inherited from their father. Beginning with the classics of Bordeaux, they went on to build their knowledge by absorbing the work and critique of Robert Parker. Perhaps naturally, this interest led down a path towards the most prestigious bottles from Burgundy, with cuvées such as this 1972 from Leroy becoming of great interest. Expanding this curiosity from red cuvées to the region’s rarer whites saw acquisitions like a 2014 Montrachet grand cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and this Echezeaux grand cru from Bizot. All wines that have brought our seller great joy.

Nor have they neglected other fine wine regions. The collection features Bordeaux bottles such as these 2015 and 2016 Duclot cases, Rhône icons like a 2006 Rayas, and Jura gems including the 2016 Savagnin from Domaine des Murmures.

After a decade of building a collection of bottles and a wealth of knowledge, one wine came around that changed everything. In 2010, our consignor had the good fortune of tasting an Aligoté cuvée from Domaine d’Auvenay. It was love at first glass thanks to a sommelier who recommended the cru in a restaurant. After this, a borderline obsession developed, and with great patience they managed to collect a beautiful vertical selection of Auvenay’s Aligoté in the 2006 to 2015 vintages. For this sale, they’ve decided to part with one of the treasured bottles, one of the earlier 2006 vintages.

Admiration for vintners

The owner of this private collection has always sought wines that exude their terroir and the soul of their vintner. Rather than big names made in big quantities (and often at big prices), this consignor prefers rare cuvées borne of a unique and exceptional know-how. Uncorking bottles like this; we agree, is a wonderful experience; getting a sense for the history and culture of a vineyard and an impression of whoever crafted it.

However, the speed at which this collector opens their cuvées doesn’t allow for the stock to be renewed as often as they’d like, hence the decision to sell on a section of their cellar.

An exceptional catalogue

Other names you might be interested in from this collection include Coche-Dury, Latour, Lafite Rothschild, Prieuré Roch, and Pegau, all of whom have arrived alongside lesser-known but equally wonderful bottles. Our consignor hopes that these gems will bring bidders the same feeling he gets when finally getting his hands on a long sought-after wine.
