Top 100 most sought-after wines – Bordeaux leads the way

The so-called Bordeaux decline is an unknown phenomenon at iDealwine: of the 100 most sought-after wines (alerts created) by our customers, 92 were from Bordeaux! However, this domination becomes less when considering all of the alerts set by buyers (tens of thousands).

Bordeaux Yquem

The iDealwine analysis of the most sought-after wines lead to a clear observation: the top wines of Bordeaux are well ahead in the « wine alerts » set by buyers on iDealwine.com, occupying almost all of the Top 100 places for the most sought-after wines. This obviously doesn’t reflect the current theory of the decline of Bordeaux. However, when we broaden the analysis to not only include the Top 100 wines, but all of the programmed alerts, the distribution is more balanced, with Bordeaux representing only 56% of alerts set.

Among the many tools available to monitor the wine market on iDealwine.com, the “alerts” are very widely used. It allows buyers to be notified in real time of the availability of their preferred wines (if required in a specific vintage) within the iDealwine sales. The use of this tool is also interesting for analysing data, since it allows us to find the most sought-after wines on our website.

In 2010, the first edition of this list was also dominated by Bordeaux, occupying 42 of the Top 50 for wines from this region (84%). In 2013, 82 of the Top 100 wines were from Bordeaux and now, in 2015, this list is even more heavily dominated by Bordeaux, with 92 wines.

The alerts primarily relate to the grand crus of Bordeaux, including the « Firsts »: Yquem, Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion, Cheval Blanc, Angélus, Ausone, Pavie and Petrus. The most sought-after wine – Yquem – is no great surprise, with vintages ranging between 1975 and 2005. This is followed by Léoville Las Cases, Petrus and Mouton Rothschild, tied in second place, as well as Cos d’Estournel and Lynch Bages, all from Bordeaux.

Considering the region’s appellations, Pauillac is ranked top (19 wines), followed by Sauternes/Barsac (15), Saint-Julien (11), Saint-Emilion (10), Margaux (9), Pomerol (8), Saint-Estèphe (8), Pessac-Léognan (6), Haut Médoc (3), Moulis (2) and Côtes de Bourg (1).

Aside from Bordeaux, our Top 100 comprises five wines from Languedoc, all from domaine Grange des Pères. This domaine was already ranked 19th in 2013’s Top 100 and 44th in 2010’s Top 50. This year’s Top 100 also includes three wines/vintages from the Rhône Valley, more specifically Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Clos des Papes 2005 and Rayas from 2000 and 2005.

The surprise is the fact that no Burgundy wines appear in this year’s Top 100, while there were at least seven included in 2013’s Top 100. Considering a broader spectrum of 1,000 references, Burgundy represents 46 of the wines/vintages (20 from Romanée-Conti), or 4% of the total. Champagne, also absent from the Top 100, represents 2.6% of these wines; Rhône represents 8%, Languedoc (100% Grange des Pères) 2.2% and the Loire 2%.

Finally, looking at all alerts set by buyers, the distinction is much more balanced and the main regions are divided as follows:

Bordeaux: 56.6% of total
Burgundy: 15.9%
Rhône: 9.9%
Loire: 4.7%
Champagne: 4%
Other: 2.3%
Languedoc: 2.1%

In Burgundy, the wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti were the most sought-after. Other popular domaines from this region include Henri Jayer, Louis Jadot, Leroy, Georges Roumier, Leflaive, Raveneau, René and Vincent Dauvissat, Ramonet, Méo-Camuzet, Joseph Drouhin, Domaine de l’Arlot, Domaine d’Auvenay, Comte Georges de Vogüé , Coche-Dury and Armand Rousseau.

In the Rhône Valley, the most sought-after domaines were Château Rayas, Yves Cuilleron, Vieux Télégraphe, Le Clos du Caillou, René Rostaing, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Marius Gentaz-Dervieux, Etienne Guigal, Chapoutier, Jean-Louis Chave, Henri Bonneau, Georges Vernay, François Villard and Château Grillet.
