The Rhône Valley: our 600 top picks, from €8

Rhone mad

Today, we’re putting the spotlight on one of France’s (and the world’s) finest winemaking regions: the Rhone valley. This region is known for its powerful, aromatic wines full of sunshine and character, which can also be exemplars of finesse and elegance. Behold our  600 top picks.

Northern Rhone

Let’s kick things off with the very north of the region and the Côte-Rôtie appellation. You will find Guigal’s famous trio La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque and Château d’Ampuis, alongside other classics from the appellation: Michel et Stéphane Ogier, Jean-Michel Gerin, Jamet, René Rostaing, the very popular Gangloff, Jasmin… These prestigious signatures will pair perfectly with the last of your winter dishes of meat in sauce.

One of the finest white wines in the Rhône, Château-Grillet, is available in the 2006, 2007, 2011, 2014 and 2015 vintages. Any occasion to finally taste this true icon. Neighbours of Condrieu: Georges Vernay, Gangloff, Jamet are also… There again, only the best names feature which, with their fat, unctuousness and unique aromatics, go perfectly with poultry in sauce, shellfish or asparagus.

The renowned houses Chapoutier and Guigal once again represent Saint-Joseph, but also the excellent domain Gonon (wines with legendary finesse), Jean-Louis Chave and, at incredibly reasonable prices, Graillot, Domaine du Tunnel, Aléofane and Pierre et Jérôme Coursodon.

In Crozes-Hermitage, you will find the domains Combier and Graillot, but also Aléofane, Les 4 Vents and Domaine des Entrefaux, three signatures at very low prices. These wines are less powerful and less fruity, and could go with simpler foods, such as charcuterie, poultry or cheeses.

The largest lot in the sale is a methuselah of Hermitage from Maison Chapoutier. Guigal’s great Hermitage cuvée, Ex Voto is available in the 2015 vintage. Jaboulet’s Hermitage La Chapelle 2006 is available in jeroboam format. Some very sought-after wines from Domaine Bernard will delight those of you who are swift enough to snap them up. Lastly, bottles from the mythical domain Jean-Louis Chave feature in excellent old vintages (1991, 1994, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2015). These wines are particularly well-suited to meats such as beef, duck or lamb.

Last but not least, in the Cornas AOC, you’ll find the two stars of the appellation: Thierry Allemand and Auguste Clape, in addition to the fantastic domains Domaine de Coulet and du Tunnel. In Saint-Péray, we thoroughly recommend Alain Voge.

Southern Rhone

Rasteau lies in the north of the southern Rhone, an appellation from which we are happy to offer you wines from domains: La Soumade, Marcel Richaud, and Elodie Balme, our favourite of the moment. These sun-soaked, spiced wines go wonderfully with meat in Provençal herbs (lamb, duck).

Gigondas from Domain Santa Duc are available in the excellent vintages 1999, 2000, and we also recommend domain La Bouïssière, one of the appellation’s best producers. These powerful, warm and full-bodied wines are the perfect ally for powerful meats such as mutton or wild feathered game.

Still relatively unknown, the Vacqueyras appellation produces its fair share of great wines, with for instance Emmanuel Reynaud’s little gem, Château des Tours, but also Domain Roucas, Toumba and La Monardière.

The king of the southern Rhone, Château Rayas is of course available in this sale, in the following vintages: 1998, 2004, 2006, 2007. Rayas’ satellite domains also feature, whether you’re looking for Fonsalette (1988, 1999, 2000) or Pignan (2003). You will also find renowned cuvées such as Roger Sabon’s Secret de Sabon 1999; Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2014 and 2015 from Château de Beaucastel; Réserve des Célestins 2011 from Henri Bonneau and the Cuvée du Centenaire Les Cailloux in several vintages. Lastly, in a more traditional vein, the finest signatures in the appellation are also represented: Charvin, le Clos des Papes, Beaucastel, Pierre Usseglio, Saint-Préfert, Pierre André, le Vieux Télégraphe, Santa Duc, La Janasse, Marcoux, la Vieille Julienne, La Barroche, La Mordorée, Clos Saint-Jean…

As a bonus, for every 6 bottles bought in this sale, you will get a free map of the Rhone wine region (A2 format), in partnership with La Carte des Vins.

Happy shopping!
