Full of incredible finds at attractive prices, the Southern Rhône is a land worth discovering. Don’t take our word for it, see for yourself…
We’ll start with the most prestigious appellation hailing from this region, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. You’ll find Château de Beaucastel’s grande cuvée Hommage à Jacques Perrin (the 2014 and 2015 vintage also being available in large format sizes), but also Le Vieux Donjon (2005), classic in style, and La Vieille Julienne that combines finesse with elegance. More excellent examples include Pierre André (2010), Les Cailloux Cuvée du Centenaire (2006, 2010) – from old vines -, le Vieux Télégraphe (2005) – intense, deep and well balanced – Pierre Usseglio (2009) – classic, powerful, well rounded and spiced – and Clos Saint-Jean, not to mention gems from domains Charvin, La Janasse, Saint-Préfert, le Clos des Papes, Marcoux and La Barroche.
You can also get your hands on some incredible Côtes-du-Rhône at attractive prices, the wines from Château Fonsalette (2006 and 2007) being a prime example. This domain is owned by Emmanuel Reynaud and the wines are vinified at Château Rayas. Another vineyard in the Emmanuel Reynaud sphere is Domaine des Tours and here too you can find fantastic value. Finally, you’ll find some excellent drinking wines in Coudoulet from Beaucastel, the offerings from Elodie Balme, Les P’tits Gars and Le Petit Martin from Oratoire Saint-Martin and La Syrah à Papa from Domaine du Monteillet, all in the 2016 vintage.
From the Côtes-du-Vivarais AOC, be sure to try something from Domaine Gallety, the best ambassador for this young appellation. Their wines are dense, rich and well balanced with pleasant freshness.
The backbone of the Rasteau AOC has to be Domaine de la Soumade, whose wines are fleshy, dense and fruity with great concentration, the perfect choice for those who are partial to a powerful and lightly woody style.
From the Gigondas, we propose three superb domains: Santa Duc – a family property run by Yves Gras -, le Clos Des Tourelles – property of the Perrin family from Château Beaucastel – and Domaine de La Bouissière, one of the most celebrated domains from this appellation situated high up in the Dentelles de Montmirail.
If you like Vacqueyras, we strongly recommend the elegant cuvées of Domaine Roucas Toumba, Le Sang des Cailloux – an excellent biodynamic domain – and the well-known Domaine La Monardière, while from Saint-Péray it can’t be anything but the illustrious Auguste Clape!
From the Ardèche IGP, the young and promising organic Domaine des Accoles, set up by the great minds behind Domaine de l’Arlot in Nuits-Saint-Georges, is certainly worth discovering if you haven’t already.
Finally, we head to Cairanne where we remain loyal to the fantastic Marcel Richaud and l’Oratoire Saint-Martin (biodynamic), two seriously good domains whose wines speak for themselves. Marcel Richaud produces wines in a classic style that offer wonderful textures while those from Oratoire Saint-Martin boast plenty of elegance and finesse while still fully expressing their signature terroir. Cellar them for a few years or enjoy them now after a few hours in a decanter.
