Dear Father Christmas,
I realise I’m a little bit late in writing and I can imagine that you and your elves must be very busy indeed. But you must understand that iDealwine is torturing me with their latest auction and that I’m simply star-struck. If I were to list what I’m hoping for this Christmas, it would go something like this…
Let’s begin with the icon of this sale: Romanée-Conti. A seller is parting with 60 bottles from this prestigious domain. Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Vosne-Romanée, Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru… the list is long and dreamlike. At Christmas, we’re allowed to dream, aren’t we?!
Now for my guilty pleasure, mature wines. Its wild notes of game, leather, mushroom, dried and cooked fruits… how could you resist? I discovered an array of old vintages that I would have liked to open with my parents to celebrate their birth year. For my father, a Bordeaux enthusiast, I would love to try some 1996 Crus from Saint-Emilion (Château du Cauze) and Graves (Château Malartic-Lagravière). For my mother who loves the sunny south, I would opt for the 1969 Maury from Mas Amiel. To go with my grandfather’s traditional foie gras, I would serve his favourite wine in his birth year: a Sauternes. And not just any, a 1939 Château-d’Yquem.
On another note, Father Christmas, you know how much I love cooking and pairing food with wine. I’ve spotted some magnificent Alsatian Pinot Gris! There are Grands Crus, Vendanges Tardives and some rare Selection de Grains Nobles. They would all be perfect for my Asian recipes. I also picked out an Amarone della Valpolicella, a red Venetian speciality (whereby the grapes are left to dry in the sun) that I could pair with a wild boar stew.
I’m inviting my sister for dinner after Christmas. As you know, she’s a lover of art and history. Perhaps if you gave me a little vertical of Mouton-Rothschild, represented here with bottles from 1969 – 2012, I could give her a taste of vinous excellence thanks to their magnificent labels.
Dear Father Christmas, we can never have too many bottles to celebrate important occasions. Birthdays, new births, wedding anniversaries, Christmas… whatever the occasion, champagne is always the answer! A magnum of 1988 Grande Année from Bollinger, some bubbly from the incredible Jacques Sélosse, as well as stars such as Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, Ruinart and Pol Roger would be perfect.
I would love to share some of the Loire Valler’s must-try wines with my friends (the Anjou from Clau de Nell, the Coteau-du-Layon from Richard Leroy, Pouilly-Fumé Silex from Dagueneau, Sancerre La Grande Côte from Cotat and the Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux from Antoine Sanzay).
I could travel around the world from the comfort of my dining table with the non-French wines in this auction. German Eiswein and Spätlese, Ribeira del Duero from Vega Sicilia or Pingus from Spain, a Chilian Malbec from the beautiful Menoza valley, my favourite Piemontese gems Barolo and Barbaresco, and some powerful, refined reds from AVA Howell Mountain (Napa Valley).
As you can see, Father Christmas, I’m not asking for much: just the best that the wine world (and therefore from the iDealwine website!) has to offer. In return, I’ll be leaving you a mince pie and tot of Sherry by the fireplace, promise.
Your favourite iDealwinner
