Auction top picks | Back to classics

auction wine bizot

Our latest auction, closing on the 24th February, brings us back to the beauty of fine classics. Bottles from Petrus, Lafite Rothschild, Yquem, DRC, Leroy, Coche-Dury, and Rayas are all waiting. A chance to finally taste the wines you’ve been dreaming of!

The world of wine is one that evolves constantly, with new talents and new styles emerging all the time, and we love it for that! What’s equally wonderful is the way we can always return to the comfort of fine classics, including legendary labels that have been a sign of excellence for centuries. This auction is a chance to revisit such mythical names, and some of them might soon be on their merry way to your cellar…

From Bordeaux, get yourself a grand cru classé

In general, we get the impression that Bordeaux isn’t at the top of its game at the moment. However, we can’t deny that most wine lovers will light up at the thought of opening a Premier like Petrus (available in several vintages), Mouton Rothschild (notably a 2000), Lafite-Rothschild, Cheval Blanc (including a 1989), Latour, Margaux, Haut Brion, and even an Yquem in its 1959 vintage.

Of course, there’s more to be had than the most impressive names, and this auction contains some beautiful Pomerol cuvées from Château Lafleur and La Violette, Pessac grands crus classés from Haut-Bailly and Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Médoc crus classés such as the 2015 Château Pontet-Canet, and some of the finest Sauternes like 2009 Climens, 1990 Suduiraut, and 2009 Rieussec. All of these promise superb tasting moments!

Bordeaux is also a region with classics at pleasing prices such as Clos Floridène, Manou, and Puy Arnaud, as well as Grand Corbin Despagne. In the same vein, many of the cru classé estates craft second wines that are delicious in their youth, meaning you get a taste of a fine property and its style without breaking the bank.

For fans of mature vintages, note that as well as the 1959 Yquem, we have a 1947 Lafaurie Peyraguey, 1970 Broustet, and a 1961 Cos Labory.

Uncork a Burgundy icon

Who can honestly say they’ve never thought about the pure joy of someday tasting a wine from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Leroy, Coche-Dury, Georges Roumier, Faiveley, or Armand Rousseau? This auction puts these icons within your reach, with the finest Burgundian Pinot Noir like a 2010 La Tâche, a 2009 Romanée Saint-Vivant from Leroy, and a 1990 Musigny by Faiveley. These wines come from the best of the region’s grands crus and immensely talented producers. You’ll also find the crème de la crème of top Chardonnays, starting with a 2015 Corton-Charlemagne from Coche-Dury, a rare 2016 Musigny from Comte Georges de Vogüé, and a 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet by Etienne Sauzet. Which do you fancy storing in your cellar?

Top Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côte-Rôtie

Did you know that the Rhône’s 1991 vintage was an exceptional one in the region’s northern vineyards, especially for Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage? We imagine that Jamet’s Côte-Rôtie and Guigal’s 1991 La Landonne won’t have any trouble finding a home…

In the southern Rhône, the same can be said for the 2007 vintage, and we have Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées in this vintage from greats such as Rayas, Henri Bonneau & Fils’ Réserve des Célestins, and Fonsalette.

And don’t miss out on…

Other top picks from this auction include the Loire dessert wine Vouvray Goutte d’Or from Clos Naudin, available this time in its 1990 vintage, Bollinger’s 1976 R.D. Champagne, and cuvées from Overnoy in the Jura, as well as numerous mature bottles from Château Musar, a go-to Lebanese producer.

Finally, the season still calls for a warming spirit, and this auction includes some of the best of their kind! We’d like to point out the presence of exceptionally aged Armagnacs like the 1897 Réserve from Caves Fauchon, and the Erté Collection Cognacs from Courvoisier.

Happy bidding!
