Auction top picks | A wave of fine wines

We can smell the summer holidays just around the corner, and our thoughts are turning to finer things. The incredible lots in this auction are bound to inspire you, including Burgundian grands crus, majestic large formats, and even a charity lot from Château Fleur Cardinale (you’ll see it’s a very special one…)

French renown

Let’s get going with two sumptuous 12-bottle lots of Château Cheval Blanc in the superb 2005 vintage. Fans of Saint-Emilion will be equally taken by the 12-bottle lot of 2013 Château Pavie. Staying on the right bank and its top vintages, we have a three-bottle lot of 1990 Château Angélus and a six-bottle lot of Château Margaux. Crossing the Garonne, Petrus is featured in myriad vintages including 1958, 1960, 1980, and 2004. And if you’re after something truly special but can’t quite make your mind up, these Duclot Cases contains bottles from all of Bordeaux’s finest properties (Haut-Brion, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, Mission Haut-Brion, Yquem, Petrus, Cheval Blanc, and Lafite Rothschild).

Up for auction from the prestigious region of Burgundy is a gem that doesn’t come along often: a bottle of 1994 Romanée-Conti grand cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, a wine with many years ahead of it. The same can be said of the 1999 Musigny Vieilles Vignes from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, a dream bottle for fans of Pinot Noir. Gevrey-Chambertin’s unbeatable Armand Rousseau continues to impress us year after year with its highly elegant Pinot cuvées. These are available here in their 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 vintages. You’ll have to be patient, but they’ll certainly be worth the wait. Other fine domains from the region include Domaine Leroy (1984 Chambertin), Mommessin (1996 Clos de Tart), Coche-Dury (2009 Meursault), and Claude Dugat (1997 Griotte-Chambertin) to cite just a few.

Highlights from elsewhere in France include some incredible Château Rayas cuvées in vintages ranging from 1992 to 2010, and a three-bottle lot of 1978 Hermitage from Rhône stalwart Jean-Louis Chave. Since iDealwine has also become a go-to place to get your hands on fine spirits, we’d like to point out this 1900 Malvasia Reserva Madeira from Oliveiras, and the 22 Year-Old Barrel N°5 whisky by Elijah Craig.

Fizzy wine and large formats

Whether you’ve got something to celebrate or just fancy a treat, you might want to have a look at this auction’s sparkling wines and large formats. Some of our favourites from Champagne come from the highly coveted Krug, with a 1995 Clos du Mesnil and a 1971 Collection in the mix. These balanced, fresh, and delicate wines represent the quintessence of the champagne house. The Belle Epoque cuvée from Perrier-Jouët is also a marvel in its 1982 vintage, a very flattering year for the region’s produce. These large formats will be the perfect accompaniment for a generous occasion: 1976 Château Lafite Rothschild, 1970 Château Latour, and 2010 Château l’Eglise Clinet. A 2019 Corton-Charlemagne from Burgundy’s Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is also available in a large format, a distinguished and complex wine. From the Rhône Valley, we recommend Château de Beaucastel and its Hommage à Jacques Perrin, a rich and ample Hermitage that perfectly illustrates the estate’s savoir-faire.

Surf Session

What really makes this auction stand out is the inclusion of a rather unique lot in the form of Château Fleur Cardinale’s Collector Edition ‘Surf Session’! A magnum of 2019 Château Fleur Cardinale in a specially crafted case and a unique surfboard designed by Damien Marly. Only 1,500 magnums don this label, and they have been numbered by hand. All proceeds from the sale of this lot will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation, an NGO that works to protect oceans, lakes, rivers, and those who enjoy them. The organisation was founded in 1990 and has three key missions: fighting against aquatic waste, preserving water quality and the health of water users, and working on the links between climate change and coastal planning.
