And we’re off! Another auction is online until the 20th and 21st June with over 9,000 prime lots. We give you a quick Tour de France to show you some of the icons and rising stars present in this exceptional sale.
Before we start, let us draw your attention to the private collection that also features in this latest auction. A private collector with a passion for Burgundy offers up some of the delights hiding in his cellar. You’ll find, amongst other things, the incredible Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 2006 from Mugnier, the Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru 2000 from Domaine René Engel and Domaine Eugenie and different vintages of Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from Domaine Bonneau du Martray, bought by the American Stanley Kroenke (Screaming Eagle) in 2017. Lovers of white Burgundy will swoon for the Chablis grands crus and the Meursault from winemaker and actor Jean-Marc Roulot. All these wines are grouped together in one catalogue, accessible here.
We’ll start in Bordeaux where, once again, you’ll find all the finest grands crus classés. Looking for a nice case? You’ll find the very special 2008 6-bottle “Collection” case and 12-bottle lots of Pontet-Canet 2000. From the right bank, Château Angélus, who recently announced its conversion to organic viticulture, offers up a variety of different cuvées. This grand cru classé A from Saint-Emilion is proving to be a very wise buy and prices will no doubt appreciate over the years. Bordeaux lovers on the lookout for attractive price tags, we recommend bidding on crus bourgeois in classic vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010. Why not try the Rollan de By 2009? Don’t forget to peruse the collection of sweet wines in this auction too and let yourself be tempted by a grand cru classé from Sauternes like the Château Rieussec 2007.
Fine Pinot Noir from Burgundy often causes bidding frenzies, and this will no doubt be the case for the famous Musigny from Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier. However, representing Chardonnay in this auction, and challenging Pinot Noir, are some majestic Meursaults: the Premier Cru Gouttes d’Or from Leroy in the prodigious 1996 vintage and La-Sève 2008 from Clos Arnaud Ente. Turn back time with the Vosne-Romanée 1975 from Noëllat, a rare gem. Our yearly analysis of the fine wine auction market also revealed that Sylvie Esmonin is becoming a very valuable name to have in your cellar, we’ll leave you to decide between the Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2009 (in jeroboam) or the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques 2001. Don’t miss some of the other excellent cuvées in this auction such as the Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Clos des Porrets 2011 from Henri Gouges, the Volnay Premier Cru 1997 from Coche-Dury or even the marvellous Chablis Premier Cru Forest from René and Vincent Dauvissat.
Passing by Beaujolais, you’ll find all the finest examples of Gamay including delights from Marcel Lapierre, Yvon Métras, and Jean Foillard. This region is a true rising star and prices for these exceptional signatures won’t remain this enticing for long!
The Rhône is well represented in this latest auction and includes icons from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. Pignan from Château Rayas, Château de Fonsalette, Domaine des Tours…all the hard to find wines from the satellite domains of Emmanuel Reynaud that benefit from a prolonged maturation period in the cave. Cathelin from Jean-Louis Chave is also here in the 2003 and 2009 vintage. Domaine de la Janasse offers wines with excellent finesse and the cuvée Chaupin 2003 and, above all, the 2006, embody finesse, power and freshness. Both cuvées would happily sit for a few more years in your cellar.
Looking for excellent organic and biodynamic wines? Head to the Languedoc, a region that wine critic Jeb Dunnuck likes to call “a diamond in the rough” and that offers excellent wines at excellent prices. Some of the more established names include the Vin de Pays de l’Hérault 2014 and 2015, the white from Grange des Pères. We recommend Les Glorieuses from Clos Marie, a wonderful Coteau du Languedoc Pic Saint-Loup.
Resting on the theme of organic and biodynamic wines, we propose the offerings from the Loire. The acclaimed Clos Rougeard, bought by the Bouyges family in 2017 is present in this auction and will certainly attract some attention (the Saumur-Champigny and the Saumur-Brézé). Another rarity is the Vin de France Les Nourrissons from Stéphane Bernaudeau, an iconic Chenin. The wines from Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine are enjoying a rebirth thanks to domains such as Domaine de l’Ecu and Domaine d’André-Michel Bregeon. Slowly but surely, this underestimated region is on the rise. Now’s the time to stock up on these treasures for your cellar.
There’s plenty more to be found in this incredible catalogue, including icons from every region and hidden gems.
